The Death of Flash and Silverlight.
0The Death of Flash and Silverlight.
Adobe Flash and Microsoft's rather late attempt to emulate it, Silverlight could be on the way out faster than you can say 'HTML5'.
Flash has long been the standard provider of richer experiences inside browsers with some designers in the past, rather than creating real web sites deciding to make an entire flash application instead.
Adobe recently let slip that it plans to abandon its Flash Player for mobile web browsers (http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/flash-focus.html), allowing the company to refocus its mobile efforts on web standards such as HTML5 and Adobe AIR, which allows developers to convert Flash content into native mobile applications.
The announcement comes as something of a surprise considering how aggresivly Adobe has defended the Flash platform in the past but with more and more web content being viewed on mobile devices via apps it certainly makes sense for Abobe to refocus it efforts elsewhere.
Microsoft on the otherhand are being as cagey as always with no definitive yes, or no on its plans for the future of Silverlight. Silverlight, currently on version 5 is rumoured to be the last version Microsoft will ever release by some industry insiders. We will just have to wait and see what cards Microsoft holds on this one.
One thing is for sure, I certainly wont miss Silverlight and I bet most other internet users wont either.
